- decrease the screen brightness to the minimum comfortable for reading;

- decrease the time after which the phone goes to sleep mode (Settings -> Screen -> Sleep mode);

- replace animated wallpapers with normal ones, if installed.

In addition, you should turn off your mobile Internet (data transfer), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS when you are not using them.

Also, if the device is old, it might make sense to replace the battery - over time it lose their original capacity.
